The seminar was
conceived as a instrument to meet and exchange with a view to promoting and
developing contemporary Caribbean art. It was sponsored by CulturesFrance, the
French Ministry of Culture (Martinique Regional Cultural Affairs Department) and
the Ministry of Overseas Departments and Territories and AMCA

.
The overall objective was backed by the conviction that professional confer-
ences offer tremendously effective tools to develop territories and qualify
actors and thereby encourage structuring projects to emerge. The event was
also expected to help open up artistic creation in the Caribbean and situate
it in a wider context.
It therefore seemed essential to bring together various players involved in fur-
thering contemporary art in the Caribbean and its inclusion in the international
artistic scene. Artists, exhibition curators, art critiques, managers of cultural
sites, mediators, institutions, public actors and specialized media came together
for three days of roundtable discussions, artistic “cartes blanches”, exhibitions,
visits to artists studios, etc., and debates on current topics
(see box).
